Social Media
Social Media refers to websites and applications that are designed to allow people to share content quickly, efficiently and in real-time.
It's also called as "Social Network" as well as "Social Communication".
Social media is impacting students, youths and adults positively as well as negatively. Positive practices of social media increase students intelligence and understanding of human behaviour. Negative practices of social media make them materialistic, vexed and addicted to too many bad things.
Firstly, it isn't the problem created by the social networking sites, but dilemma arises when we use such sites without thinking about the further difficulties and complications and what impact will be faced by us, our family, society and country. That's why social media is not only a great tool for personal development but it is also a tool for personal and social destruction.
As one of the quote says: "You can sign up for a Facebook account by your own choice but can't Delete without the choice of Facebook."
Thus too much use of social media deviates students from their career and personal development. Secondly, social media is a playground for the New Generation. They go on playing teenage games but aren't followed by the 'Terms and Conditions' given before any games being opened. Parents are busy with their own busy businesses situations and leave behind their children with a gadget by not seeing to what they watch, search, play and leads to various dangerous hazards like addiction to games, suicidal attempts, torture to others and mainly to distraction and depression. Students don't understand the basic value and difference on how, when, where to use each application at accurate times. Though they play cricket through such gaming apps along with that they have invented kinds of unrealistic sites such as watching profiles, sending friend requests, chatting with opposite sex for pleasure and fun or just for time pass cases etc.
Thirdly, students get influenced by anti-nationalist and exclusive political practices on social media. These types of practices leads the students through a different mind-set and infect towards the love for the country, innocence with parents of national symbols and various other things.
Fourthly, today's world is a global village. Everyone is connected to one another in this vast network generated by the Internet. As said by Marshall McLuhan: 'The new electronic independence re-creates the world in the image of a global village.' The electronic independence is dependent upon the Internet. It lights-up the lives of thousands of people by spreading knowledge, thereby making us global citizens.
Fifthly, Social media usage develops communication skills and increase skill in technology which makes students become more familiar with new and emerging technologies as well as increase their media literacy through exposure to many different types of online media.
Online communities can be very diverse and expose students to many new views, points, ideas and opinions. Social media can also be a source to increase talent to work on group projects. Students can develop an optimistic image of themselves by putting best qualities out there.
Lastly, the only way to deal with this problem is through educational videos, classes that illustrates various situations which teenagers find themselves in as they don't know it might happen to them too.
Students need to be educated towards social media uses, communicational techniques, advantages and disadvantages of various software, games, etc etc.
They have a tool in their hands, they think of knowing how to use it but most of them don't. Teachers and Students have to understand we cannot stop the social media hype, but we as teachers, mentors, educators, instructors should have that provision to educate about this so called tool .ie. SOCIAL MEDIA.
